Exhaust Fans and Your Energy Bills

Are you wasting tons of money by pumping heat to the exterior of your home? Many of us would jump on this question with a resounding “NO!” Why would someone pump heat outside when you need it inside? This may sound crazy, but many homeowners are guilty of wasting tons of heat every day.  Keeping heat inside the home for as long as possible lowers energy costs because you get the most out of what you pay for every month on your gas bill. However, if you frequently use the exhaust fans in your bathrooms and kitchen, you could be wasting tons of energy and money!

What is the Purpose of an Exhaust Fan?

Depending on where the exhaust fan is located, it will have a slightly different use:

  • Bathroom Exhaust Fans: The main goal of a bathroom exhaust fan is to remove excess moisture from steamy showers that can cause mold and rot if left in the small enclosed bathroom. These fans are also used to pump out offensive odors that may linger in the bathroom after use.
  • Kitchen Exhaust Fans: The exhaust fan over the stove in the kitchen removes odors and smoke that may be created while cooking. Smoke sets off the smoke detectors when it is allowed to linger in the kitchen, and stinky foods like fish and certain kinds of sausage can make your entire home reek for days if not removed quickly.

How Long Do You Run Your Exhaust Fan?

Exhaust fans are useful and they do have their place. But, if you are overusing the exhaust fans in your home, you could be wasting precious energy. Leaving the fan on for longer than necessary not only gets rid of the moisture or odors in the area, but it also pulls out the heat, and it won’t stop at the heat in the bathroom either. If left alone, it can pull the heat out of the entire floor and possibly the entire home. The furnace will run continuously because all of heat is creating isn’t staying in the home long enough to warm the space.

Decrease Waste, Increase Comfort

So, this winter, be careful with exhaust fan use. Minimize the use of exhaust fans as much as possible, and close the doors to bathrooms if you are going to run the fan for more than a couple minutes. This will make it easy to get the most out of the heat your furnace produces and decrease waste on your energy bills.
